BPA strikes again

Apparently Sigg, the producer of those ultra-fancy, ultra-trendy aluminum water bottles, recently released a statement saying that an older version of their bottles were coated with trace amounts of BPA. A curious thing, mainly because many people began switching to metal bottles because of the BPA plastic bottle scare. Now their new epoxy liners, so cleverly called "EcoCare liners" are BPA free and customers can send in their old bottles if they so choose.

While it's a good thing that Sigg came out and admitted that BPA was in the older bottles, why it was there in the first place and why it remained undisclosed is still a mystery. The problem with BPA is that it's not regulated by the EPA yet, so manufacturers don't have to tell customers if a product has BPA. Many companies voluntarily decide to disclose the absence of BPA, mostly because it's a good way to ensure health-consious customers will buy their product.

And so the BPA battle rages on. Will policy makers ever decide to blacklist this seemingly potent estrogen mimic? Who knows. The best thing to do is be aware of what products you use and never give companies the benefit of the doubt.
